Though the Assam Government as well as the Supreme Court are attaching utmost importance to preparing an error-free and correct National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state of Assam, the ground reality presents a shameful and alarming picture.
In almost all the districts across the State, numerous officials are engaged in the job who do not even have the minimum expertise to verify the documents in proper and systematic way.
Such an incident came to light involving a resident of Chandighat Tea Estate in Silchar, named Jayanti Sawtal.
For family tree verification, she was issued notice to attend the Palanghat Block Development Office on March 26.
In her notice, the time for verification was written as 11 am. But the specific Local Registrar of Citizens Registration (LRCR) one Mustafa Alam Laskar was absent.
Jayanti Sawtal and around 50 other candidates waited till 1:00 pm and then the LRCR reached at the office.
Finally, when he started on his job, he admitted that he does not know how to verify the concerned papers.

He also said that no training whatsoever has been given in this regard.
Failing to find any solution, she returned home which is at a distance of around 40 km from Palanghat NRC Seva kendra.
Later talking to Northeast Now, Jayanti expressed her dismay and anxiety over the whole matter.
She is now in a fix how to rectify her problem to find the name of her family members in the NRC.
