The martyrdom of Burhan Wani sent shockwaves throughout the region, amplifying the longstanding conflict in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and drawing the international community’s attention to Kashmir, Wani hailed from a relatively privileged family but chose to embrace the path of a civic activist at a young age. Witnessing the relentless attacks of the Indian army on innocent Kashmiris fueled his determination to raise his voice against the oppressive forces. At the age of 15, Wani emerged as a vocal advocate for the rights of the Kashmiri people. His fearless persona and impassioned speeches quickly garnered recognition, earning him the reputation of a courageous Kashmiri activist. Leveraging the power of social media platforms, he effectively spread his message of opposition to the Indian occupation, captivating the attention and support of numerous IIOJK youth. His ability to connect with the younger generation and inspire them to join the cause elevated him to a prominent figure within the freedom movement.

However, on July 8, 2016, tragedy struck as a joint operation by the Indian occupation forces, consisting of the army, police, and paramilitary, tracked down and martyred Burhan Wani in the Kokernag area of south Kashmir’s Islamabad district. Pakistan called for an end to the use of force against civilians, the withdrawal of Indian occupation forces, and the implementation of a plebiscite by UN resolutions. Wani’s martyrdom was a turning point in the Kashmir freedom movement, inspiring a new wave of struggle and widespread youth participation. Social media platforms played a pivotal role in highlighting the Kashmir issue, enabling activists to share stories, expose human rights abuses, and rally support from the international community.
