USS Truxtun (DDG-103) will head back out to sea for a deployment around three months after returning from its last one, U.S 2nd Fleet announced Monday.

Truxtun will leave Tuesday from Naval Station Norfolk, Va., on an independent deployment, according to the announcement.

While the Navy could not say where the ship is headed, it is likely Truxtun will join other independently deployed destroyers in U.S. Southern Command or U.S. Central Command.

Both commands have seen an amassing of naval ships as the U.S. continues Operation Southern Spear targeting alleged drug boats in SOUTHCOM and the Trump administration keeps its eyes on Iran in CENTCOM, following protests against the country’s regime.

“Due to operational security standards, we cannot discuss timelines and locations of deploying U.S. assets. The sailors of USS Truxtun are ready to deploy and accomplish our nation’s work at sea. The combat capabilities that this ship brings to a fight will be ready wherever and whenever tasked to deter, and, if necessary, defeat aggression in defense of America’s interests around the world,” Cmdr. Dawn Stankus, spokesperson with U.S. Second Fleet, told USNI News.

Truxtun returned in October from a seven-month deployment that included a stint in the Red Sea.

The U.S. currently has 12 ships in the Caribbean, including two independently-deployed destroyers – USS Thomas Hudner (DDG-116) and USS Stockdale (DDG-106). The Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group and the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group are also operating in the area, according to USNI News’ Fleet and Marine Tracker.

The U.S. has 10 ships in CENTCOM as of Monday. The Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group is in the Arabian Sea. USS Delbert D. Black (DDG-119) is in the Red Sea after arriving last week.

There are two independently-deployed destroyers – USS Mitscher (DDG-57) and USS McFaul (DDG-74) – in the Persian Gulf, along with three Littoral Combat Ships.

The U.S. also has two independently deployed destroyers nearby in the Mediterranean Sea.
