In today's globalized world, a nation’s airline is no longer merely a means of transport; it also represents the initial and final impressions foreigners form of the country. Even before a traveler learns anything about a country’s systems and facilities, he or she gains insight into the country's people, culture, and hospitality.

For that reason, aviation has become one of the most powerful instruments of national branding in the twenty-first century.

As Bangladesh continues its remarkable transformation into one of Asia's fastest-growing economies, Biman Bangladesh Airlines' role extends well beyond passenger and cargo transport. The airline possesses the capacity to shape international perceptions, strengthen national confidence, support economic development, connect the diaspora, and project a modern image of Bangladesh to the world.

In many respects, every Biman flight serves as a flying ambassador of Bangladesh.

Countries such as Singapore, Qatar, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates have demonstrated how a strong national carrier can significantly enhance a nation's global reputation. Airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, and Turkish Airlines are not merely successful commercial enterprises; they function as symbols of national excellence. Their service quality, hospitality, punctuality, and operational professionalism collectively reinforce positive perceptions about their respective countries.

Bangladesh possesses the same opportunity.

As the nation's flag carrier, Biman Bangladesh Airlines represents Bangladesh before the international community every day. Every aircraft carrying the red-and-green flag across continents becomes a visible expression of the country's aspirations, culture, and confidence. Every interaction between passengers and airline personnel shapes perceptions of Bangladesh.

That is why the significance of having a highly regarded national airline goes beyond business purposes.

For tourists visiting the country for the first time, the image of Bangladesh may begin from within an aircraft. How professional the flight attendants are, how clean the planes are, how delicious the food tastes, and how effective the services provided can all come together to form the first story about the country. Having a good airline implies discipline, professionalism, hospitality, and strength. In other words, poor service can unconsciously perpetuate false ideas about Bangladesh.

Today, Bangladesh is a country experiencing rapid economic growth, digital transformation, infrastructure modernization, and increasing global relevance. Yet perceptions are rarely shaped solely by economic statistics or policy reports. They are shaped through lived experiences—and aviation remains one of the most influential of those experiences.

A Personal Journey That Reflects a Larger Transformation

My recent travel experience offered a compelling illustration of this reality.

On May 29, 2026, I traveled with my family from Toronto to Dhaka aboard Biman Bangladesh Airlines. Having flown extensively over three decades on some of the world's most acclaimed airlines—including Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, and Turkish Airlines—I boarded the flight with both professional curiosity and high expectations.

What I experienced was both pleasantly surprising and deeply encouraging.

From check-in to arrival, the journey reflected a level of service quality that deserves far greater recognition. The cabin crew consistently demonstrated professionalism, attentiveness, warmth, and courtesy. More importantly, the service reflected an authenticity that is increasingly rare in modern commercial aviation. Passengers were greeted with genuine respect and a distinctly Bangladeshi sense of hospitality that felt sincere rather than scripted.

During the long trip, meals and refreshments were consistently served to the passengers. In terms of the quality and frequency of meals, the airline performed remarkably well. The passengers received four good meals and refreshment services during the trip, and the level of attention paid to them was better than what is seen on most famous airlines worldwide.

However, what was perhaps more impressive was the incorporation of culture into the journey that the airline provided its passengers. The use of greeting practices common to Bengali people, the warm hospitality shown, and the politeness made the passengers feel at home, unlike other very efficient international airlines that sometimes find it difficult to provide.

Voices from the Cabin: Why Passengers Are Taking Notice

What made this trip especially informative was that my own positive perceptions were not isolated. Rather, conversations on the flight with other passengers who are experienced international flyers all pointed to one thing: Biman Bangladesh Airlines has been stepping up its game and providing service levels comparable to those of world-famous airlines.

Sitting close by was Mr. Mohammed Rafi Salim, an American-Bangladeshi businessman who regularly flies on international carriers to North America, the Middle East, and South Asia. He recalled his experience and noted that, even though both airlines had established themselves internationally through their efficiency and quality of service, Biman offers something unique that is increasingly scarce in the modern world of aviation – a human touch.

“Qatar Airways and Emirates Airline are both great airlines; however, there is something special about Biman. It’s like a more personalized experience. There is genuine concern for their customers from the staff. One gets to feel taken care of.”

This was his way of pointing out an aspect of customer service that is usually missed in various assessments. Technology aside, it all boils down to how well they have been treated.

Another insightful perspective came from Ms. Daisy Hossain, a successful entrepreneur based in Dallas, Texas, who owns two hotels and was returning to Bangladesh to visit family. Having previously worked for Biman Bangladesh Airlines and traveled extensively on international carriers, including Turkish Airlines, she offered a uniquely informed comparison.

"Turkish Airlines has an outstanding network and excellent customer services but what I found outstanding about the cabin crew in this Biman flight is their caring attitude towards the elderly, children, and passengers requiring help. This made our long journey a pleasant one and like being with your own family."

Her comments underscored a quality long associated with Bangladeshi culture: heartfelt hospitality rather than transactional.

Perhaps the most striking assessment came from another frequent international business traveler who regularly flies through Doha, Dubai, and Istanbul.

“I honestly did not expect this level of service. The meals, refreshments, and overall passenger care throughout the flight were outstanding. I have traveled on Qatar Airways, Emirates, and Turkish Airlines many times. Biman's service on this route was certainly comparable and, in some respects, even better because of its cultural authenticity and human touch.”

Such testimonials are significant because they come from passengers who regularly fly some of the world's most acclaimed airlines and therefore have a meaningful basis for comparison.

Our own positive experience was further enhanced by the extraordinary support provided by Dr. Mahbub Jahan Khan, Air Commodore (Retd.), Strategic Planning and Transportation Director for US-Bangla Airlines and a former distinguished executive of Biman Bangladesh Airlines. It is Dr. Khan who wholeheartedly suggested that we take the Biman flight for our journey. Upon reaching Dhaka, Dr. Khan ensured we received every possible convenience and assistance. This kind of hospitality shown by Dr. Khan epitomized the qualities traditionally associated with the Bangladeshi aviation fraternity.

Collectively, these experiences illustrate the following fact about the world of aviation today: while people tend to appreciate state-of-the-art planes, luxurious lounge areas, and entertainment systems, what they recall most fondly is something much more straightforward: kindness, courtesy, attentiveness, and warmth.

The contemporary global air travel sector is marked by uniformity and professionalism. However, when it comes to airline industry superiority, one company leads. This company is none other than Biman Bangladesh Airlines. Through a combination of professionalism and traditional Bangladeshi hospitality, Biman offers something no other airline can.

Aviation as a Tool of Soft Power

Apart from acting as a means of transport, Biman is also among the top vehicles through which the government of Bangladesh exerts its soft power.

No organization interacts with such a wide range of international clientele on a daily basis. Through the services offered, the food provided, the languages used, and the interpersonal interactions, the airline showcases Bangladesh to thousands of visitors each year.

The famous Bengali tradition of hospitality is undoubtedly among the best things that Bangladesh has to offer. With professionalism and efficiency in line with global standards, this can make Biman Airlines stand out from its competitors worldwide.

Contemporary travelers not only want to be comfortable, but they also want to experience something real. They want to interact with people and have a culture-filled journey. This gives Biman Airlines a unique edge over its competitors.

Connecting the Global Bangladeshi Community

The airline also plays a critical role in strengthening relationships between Bangladesh and its diaspora communities.

For millions of Bangladeshis living abroad, national institutions often serve as emotional bridges connecting them to their homeland. A reliable, efficient, and respected national airline provides more than transportation; it fosters national pride and strengthens emotional attachment to the country.

This is particularly true for the expatriate population from Bangladesh living in North America, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East.

Having direct international flights conveys not only convenience but also national pride, global connectivity, and international relevance. Among other things, the flight route from Toronto to Dhaka is of great symbolic and pragmatic significance, as it enhances relations between Bangladesh and Canada while benefiting Canada in many ways.

Aviation and Economic Competitiveness

The presence of a powerful national airline can directly drive economic growth.

Travelers, businesses, investors, and other entities are increasingly reliant on international connectivity. Potential investors consider connectivity when deciding to invest in new markets. Travelers value efficiency and effectiveness in choosing where to go. Industries that produce for export depend on efficient transportation networks.

Aviation is therefore no longer a peripheral sector. It has become a strategic pillar of national competitiveness.

Bangladesh's thriving garment industry, expanding pharmaceutical sector, growing information technology ecosystem, and emerging tourism ambitions all benefit from stronger global connectivity. As the country's economy continues to diversify, Biman Bangladesh Airlines' strategic importance will only increase.

For this reason, investments in aviation excellence should be viewed not merely as corporate expenditures but as investments in national infrastructure and international competitiveness.

Carrying the Image of Bangladesh

To fully realize its potential, Biman must continue its journey of improvement through fleet modernization, digital innovation, enhanced customer service training, operational efficiency, punctuality, and premium passenger experiences.

Yet perhaps the most important transformation is conceptual.

Biman must continually recognize that it is not merely a passenger carrier. It is carrying the image, reputation, and aspirations of Bangladesh itself.

The world's most respected airlines succeeded by aligning service excellence with national identity. Singapore Airlines became synonymous with refinement and discipline. Qatar Airways projected luxury and connectivity. Emirates represented ambition and global reach. Turkish Airlines showcased a nation bridging continents and civilizations.

Bangladesh can develop its own distinctive aviation identity—one rooted in warmth, resilience, hospitality, cultural richness, and modern professionalism.

A Symbol of Bangladesh's Rise

The future of Biman Bangladesh Airlines should therefore be viewed through a broader national lens.

An efficient national airline provides economic gains, improves international diplomacy, increases tourism, involves the diaspora, and raises national prestige all at once.

Bangladesh is no longer a country striving to prove its worth. Bangladesh has now become an emerging economic powerhouse, with growing influence, stronger business acumen, and greater international confidence. This must be reflected in their national carrier.

Indeed, my recent trip from Toronto to Dhaka showed me that this process is well underway. It proved to me that Bangladesh is not only capable economically but also in terms of service culture, human resources, and hospitality, to create an airline that will rival the most prestigious flag carriers around the world.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines has the opportunity to become far more than a transportation company. It can become a powerful symbol of a confident, modern, and globally respected Bangladesh—a source of pride for millions of citizens at home and abroad.

“You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” — Will Rogers

For many people, tourists, business persons, students, and travelers, Biman Airlines is the image of Bangladesh that they see first. It is through this airline that Bangladesh’s reputation and image travel across the continents.
