Oxford City Council members unanimously voted to support a cross-party motion that said it is ‘no longer appropriate’ to celebrate the Nobel Peace Prize laureate after violence erupted across Myanmar in August.

She is the country’s de facto leader.

The council granted her the Freedom of the Oxford in 1997.

She has close links to the city, having lived in Park Town with her family and earlier attended St Hugh’s College from 1964 until 1967.

Over 400,000 people belonging to Myanmar’s Rohingya minority have been displaced after violence allegedly instigated by the country’s military.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been the country’s state counsellor, a position similar to prime minister, since April 2016.

Oxford City Council will hold a special meeting to confirm the honour is removed on November 27.
