Colombo, June 27 (newsin.asia): Ambassadors and High Commissioners from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) met Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe here on Wednesday to seek pro-active measures to ensure the safety and security of Muslims in Sri Lanka.

The meetings took place in the context of widespread violent incidents and trade boycotts against Muslims triggered by the multiple suicide bombings carried out by an Islamic group in Colombo and other towns on April 21 in which 259 persons, including 87 children and 47 foreign nationals were killed.

The envoys emphasized the need for political leadership across the divides, to take proactive measures to create a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere among all communities.

The envoys said that creating the desired harmonious environment is crucial not just in the long term interest of the pluralist Sri Lankan society, but also for the region and beyond.

The President and Prime Minister were requested to take all steps to contain any trace of violence that could cause communal disharmony or contribute to the escalation of communal violence within Sri Lankan society.

The Lankan President and Prime Minister assured the envoys that would be continually engaged on the issues raised by them.
